William Nicholson's Shadowlands is a beautiful, moving play about the British author C.S. Lewis and his relationship with American poet Joy Davidman. It traces their friendship as it develops: first as written correspondence, through the first awkward meeting for afternoon tea, to a marriage of convenience which finally grows into a deep, passionate love affair. Balanced with the romantic scenes, this play has witty repartee between Lewis' friends who are Oxford dons and shows the comical, yet sincere relationship between Lewis and his brother Warnie.

The play isn't just about taking the courageous step to admit more than friendship and daring to fall in love; it's about the things we value in life. Lewis learns that making connections, family, commitment and love are what's important to add true meaning to his life. In addition, as in real life, the main character Lewis is a very spiritual man with a strong Christian faith. His beliefs are rocked to their foundation when he questions God's love of humanity as it causes so much pain. The play is his journey of how he accepts life and love and pays the consequences of it through loss and grief.

This play offers a great night's entertainment but audiences will leave with so much more: The play examines the issue of the strength of spirituality to sustain people through grief and suffering and the role of religious beliefs in modern times. In addition, the characters develop the idea of the importance of friendship, love and the making of connections with others. It's hard to box this play into a particular genre. It's a love story full of loss, a comedy filled with sadness and the true story of C.S. Lewis mixed with elements of fantasy. It's a play that will touch everyone's hearts.
